But I've been having a hard time feeding this voracity with thematically and intellectually appropriate books. Although my son is a second-grader, he reads at around a sixth-grade level.

This means that most books geared to second graders don't provide much of a challenge for him But Georgia Byng has come to the rescue. The Molly Moon series is both thematically appropriate for both young and older kids, and yet challenging enough for kids who are reading beyond the "Magic Tree House" or "Andrew Lost" levels.

The stories are fun, funny, suspenseful, imaginative and lengthy enough to last several days - both my son and I are enjoying them immensely in fact, when he plows ahead on his own in one of them, I find myself reading on my own to catch up and make sure I don't miss anything. We've read two so far and can't wait to get all the others.

Byng gets bonus points, too, for creating a strong, interesting female protagonist whom boys will be just as eager to read about as girls - a definite and welcome rarity in today's most popular children's literature.

The climate is hot and dry and the citizens of the country all walk around mindless, doing what the princess wants when she wants. Mickey is found to be living in the palace under the control of the princess and has no knowledge of his past. Rescuing Mickey is no easy feat and almost costs Molly her special powers for life. An exciting read that keeps you going. Jun 22, Mur Lafferty rated it liked it Shelves: This was another fun Molly Moon read, even using interesting methods to knock Molly down to not having as much power as she's had before.

Molly discovers she has a twin and goes forward in time to find him, and finds a very strange world ruled by a sophisticated, sadistic six year old and some hypnotized human-animal hybrids.

Rocky has a small role but is missing for most of the book.

Petula is the constant intelligent companion, and she meets more people and animals willing to help her along. Let's stop and think here. She can: Stop time. Move through time. And now she can read minds. She already has god-like power, what else will she gain?

At least in this book they literally took her mindreading skills and her magic crystals away so that she had to rely on real ingenuity, but I wonder if Molly is becoming too powerful for plots to threaten her. Feb 03, Dawn Teresa rated it it was ok Shelves: Very disappointing as I had enjoyed the earlier books.

Much of the charm of Molly Moon books is the relationship between Molly and Rocky. By the middle of this book, Rocky was absent from the story and the plot just plodded along and got way too ridiculous.

Could have used serious editing. Perhaps a younger reader would enjoy some of the silly, over-the-top weirdness, but not sure a young attention span could have stayed with it long enough to do so.

The book dragged on and o 2. The book dragged on and on, and I found myself reading faster and faster, trying to quicken the ending and put myself out of my literary misery. When the resolution finally did come, it was all too clean, quick, and easy. Just not a well-executed story all-around. Sep 05, Helen rated it liked it Recommended to Helen by: Molly Moon is able to time travel and use hypnosis to control people.

She has discovered that she was born a twin and that her brother was taken from the hospital where they were born and all evidence of his existence had been erased, except from the minds of her parents.

Apr 12, Heather rated it really liked it. I'm reading this aloud to my seven and a half year old and six year old, whoa re enjoying it immensely. Unlike Desperau, which was a quick, if boring, read, this is a slower read and yet the time passes more quickly I find myself stopping reading aloud to them and then sneaking in another chapter before I put the book down myself.

The villan is weird enough to be sincerely creepy, but not so scary that my kids can't sleep after I read to them, and the storyline is engaging and creative. The d I'm reading this aloud to my seven and a half year old and six year old, whoa re enjoying it immensely.

The details are good. Very creative! Sep 14, Sofie Noble rated it it was amazing. This was the final book in the Molly Moon series and the ending was very heartwarming. The main character, Molly turns out to be very lucky and ends up having the perfect life!

It's a very twisted ending from what her life was like in the beginning. The story was very good and the plot was better than the others. I think I liked this book best of all because it had the most interesting plot. Oct 23, Tristan rated it it was amazing.

I am 8 yrs old and read October for the first time.

This is the third I've read in the series and my favorite so far. Creative and unique storyline plus it has parts that are funny, cool and even a tiny bit creepy, but I was never scared. I would have been scared back when I was seven. May 04, stephanie cat rated it did not like it Recommends it for: Whoever likes it Recommended to stephanie by: The awesome girl in the bookstore with the pink hair and Anberli. This was not the best book in the world, nor even close to the quality of the first two books.

It shows how Molly Moon travels into the future and finds her long-lost brother, who was stolen away by a time-traveling baby thief.

He theorizes Molly must have obtained the book and learned hypnosis, and formulates a plan. After one performance of "Stars on Mars", Nockman kidnaps Petula, threatening to kill her if Molly does not comply with his orders, and she cannot hypnotize him because he always wears the anti-hypnotic glasses he bought in Briersville.

He orders her to use her talents to steal some rare jewels from a bank for him. Having no choice, Molly agrees. All goes as planned with the robbery until she finds Rocky, who much to her surprise has also learned hypnosis.

He had previously stolen and learned from the missing chapters of Molly's hypnotism book, "Long Distance Hypnosis" and "Voice-Only Hypnosis".

He also reveals that he had intended to take Molly with him when he was adopted, but had not been able to hypnotize his parents. Since then, he left them as they were not much fun.

Working together, the two successfully pull off the robbery, but later form a plan to return the jewels. Rocky uses his power of voice-only hypnotism to hypnotize Nockman into giving up his life of crime. He then helps Molly return the stolen jewels by placing them in hollow garden gnomes and placing them around the city.

However, Molly keeps one diamond, which Petula found in her jacket. Molly gives her part in "Stars on Mars" back to Davina, and returns home with Rocky. Out of sympathy for the broken man, she takes Nockman with her. Before leaving, they work together to record a commercial, using their hypnotic powers to convince people to be kind to their kids. However, when they return, they find Ms. Adderstone and Edna have disappeared, believing that the children there will be happier without any grownups around to tell them what to do, leaving the orphanage in chaos. When the resolution finally did come, it was all too clean, quick, and easy.
