Hardcover , pages. Published on March 15, by Katherine Tegen Books. Add a Rating. I got this book from a friend for a Christmas present and I waited a long time to read it until now. I was so sucked in, I couldn't stop reading. Definitely a recommendation for the people who love fantasy, Harry Potter, and magic. This series is so amazing. I mean, I kind of had to stop reading the sixth book for, like, three months and have not gotten back to it, but here is the premise.

Magyk (book)

Septimus Heap apparently died on the day he was born and on that very day, his dad found a baby girl that the Extraordinary wizard told him to keep. They then raised the child as their own. Or is he still out there? Are you looking for a good book to read?? One that you are sure to love if you loved Harry Potter?? I absolutely LOVE this book!! Wizards, Princesses, Charms all of this and you are sure to love it right???

Try this book out I am positive you will love it. Jenna, just a bit stronger than much to his dismay manages to keep him quiet, before he kicks the boat, and alerts the Hunter where the boat is. Marcia uses a spell to Project an image of the Muriel, Sally's boat, and distract the Hunter, upon which he loses the group's trail, and has to return to the castle.

The group reaches the Marshes and must navigate through perilous bogs, but eventually reaches a safe cottage belonging to Zelda Heap, Silas' aunt and a White Witch. Aunt Zelda keeps everyone safe and well-fed throughout the winter.

The group learns that the Supreme Custodian is doing the bidding of DomDaniel, an ex-ExtraOrdinary Wizard and an evil Necromancer; with Marcia and Jenna gone from the Castle, he is free to return and wreak havoc on the inhabitants. The Heaps, Marcia, and Boy settle into life at the cottage. After 2 weeks, Marcia decides to make 52 shield bugs to use in case of an emergency.

One day, with a heavy fog covering the island, Boy gets lost when he gets separated from Jenna and Nicko on a walk. He wanders around until he walks through a bush and falls into a hidden hole. He finds himself in a series of underground tunnels in total darkness. Scared, he begins searching in the dark until he finds a ring shaped like a dragon biting its tail.

It shrinks to fit his finger and begins to glow, allowing him to find his way through the tunnels, which happen to lead into Aunt Zelda's closet. He keeps the ring a secret for some time. Marcia begins teaching the children basic Magyk to protect themselves, and Boy finds that he is a natural, even though he has never done Magyk in his life. Marcia sees potential in him and asks him to be her Apprentice, but Boy declines, believing that the only reason he can do Magyk is because of the ring.

Silas receives word that his eldest son, Simon, has gone missing. He sets off to journey back to the Castle to look for him, but soon afterwards is cut off from the Marshes by the area's annual winter storm, the Big Freeze. After several weeks without word from him, a Message Rat finally delivers a strange message, apparently from Silas, asking Marcia to return to the Castle.

Marcia leaves at midnight, intending to use the Magykal Midnight Minutes for protection, but is captured upon her arrival because her timepiece was wrong from the energy at Zelda's cottage. She is thrown into Dungeon Number One and nearly dies, but Alther finds her and manages to keep her alive.

When the Big Thaw finally sets in and the Marshes become navigable again, the Hunter, who has discovered the location of the Cottage, takes DomDaniel's Apprentice out into the Marshes and makes another attempt to kill the occupants of the cottage. He finds Jenna, Nicko, and Boy out on one of the islands, and gives chase.

Jenna and Boy split off from Nicko and the Hunter follows them until Boy realizes where they are, and tackles Jenna into the concealed hole he'd found weeks ago. He leads her through the tunnels back to Zelda's cottage, where they find the Hunter Frozen by Aunt Zelda, and arrive shortly before Nicko and a captured Apprentice. Zelda and Boy use a spell to erase the Hunter's memories and convince him his is a buffoon looking for work in a circus, and the Hunter leaves, leaving the Apprentice behind.

The cottage occupants interrogate the Apprentice and he tells them that his name is Septimus Heap, and that he is a seventh son of a seventh son. They don't believe him, as he is an awful person and in league with DomDaniel. Later that night, the Apprentice sneaks out of the cottage and takes the Hunter's abandoned canoe across the Marshes to DomDaniel's ship in Bleak Creek. After discovering the Apprentice's disappearance the next morning, Jenna, Nicko, and Boy set off to look for him, and discover the ship, as well as Alther hiding nearby.

He informs them of all that has happened at the Castle in their absence and that Marcia may be on board the ship. He asks the children not to do anything dangerous and leaves, after which they promptly sneak on board to try and find Marcia. However, they are discovered by DomDaniel, and must make a hasty escape, but not before they do see Marcia and Boy manages to give her his Dragon Ring, which returns her powers.

DomDaniel begins to summon a massive storm to try and drown them, which floods the Marshes as they get back to the cottage. Zelda tells them to go down into the tunnels to hide, which they do, taking Maxie with them.

In the tunnels, they get a chance to really look at the pictures depicted on the walls. Upon Jenna's touch, the walls open up to reveal a massive cavern containing a golden boat with a dragon's neck and head, tail, and wings. She comes to life when the trio climbs on board and Jenna finds that she can communicate with the dragon as all the Queens used to be able to do during their yearly trips to visit the boat. Due to the huge storm outside, the cavern collapses and floods, allowing the boat to sail again, and fly, as it turns out she is able to do.

The trio decide to use the boat to rescue Marcia from the Vengeance. On board the Vengeance, Marcia uses her newly returned Magyk to incapacitate her guards and make her way up to the deck, where she sees the incoming Dragon Boat and a stunned and angered DomDaniel.

Septimus, Jenna and Beetle start their journey to the House of Foryx.

Sam shows them the way. They eventually reach the House and find Ephaniah near it.

He had found the last missing piece of the map but was possessed by the Thing. Septimus, Jenna and Beetle enter the House of Foryx, but accidentally all three of them go inside.

Magyk: Septimus Heap, Book One

There Septimus is taken inside a door by a girl and Septimus finds himself face to face with Hotep-Ra , first ExtraOrdinary wizard. Just as they were about to leave, Marcia and Sarah arrives outside the house on Spit Fyre, so all of them are able to return to their own time.

A boy named Barney Pot comes up and informs the apprentice that he has a SafeCharm , but Septimus doesn't hear the boy say that Aunt Zelda had sent it.

Journeying to Milo Banda's ship, the Cerys, he has Spit Fyre take him and Beetle, and eventually Jenna, home, but they are bombarded with lightning and crash-land on one of the Isles of Syren. He then encounters Lucy Gringe and Wolf Boy.

He does so, saving the Castle.

He frees Syrah from the Possessive Syren, but she is shocked into a coma upon learning she had been on the island for years and that Julius Pike was dead. She was taken to the Castle and left in the Quiet Room. Septimus tells her the events of each day, but still she remains comatose. He must preform a task, and Septimus chooses to rescue Alther , who has been banished. Marcellus gives him a Darke disguise for the task, and when Merrin unleashes a Darke Domain that engulfs the Castle, Septimus has protection.

He, Jenna, Simon, Lucy, Marcellus, and Sarah all go to the Heaps' former home in the Ramblings to stay out of the Darknesse, but eventually it seeps in and they are forced to flee.

The party organizes a rendevous with Nicko, Rupert, and Maggie, and the group travels to Bleak Creek, where Septimus goes through the Bottomless Whirlpool to find Alther. Thanks to a ghost who makes him realize that what he sees is reversed, and advice given by Simon, Septimus finds Alther and brings him out through Dungeon Number One.

Then, he and Spit Fyre engage Merrin and a Darke dragon in battle. A plan has been hatched to DeNature the ring using Alchemical Fyre , but things go terribly awry when the Darke wizards contained in the ring escape and take possession of two of Septimus's uncles.

Now, Septimus, working together his friends and family, must use the many things he has learned in both Magyk and Alchemie to defeat the Darke wizards and put an end to the ring once and for all. Characteristics Personality Septimus is an easy to talk to kind of person. He enjoys spending time on Spit Fyre with Jenna as the Navigator.

Septimus is the Imprintor and Pilot of Spit Fyre who always follows him. He is a friendly, approachable Apprentice who has, as the Castle folk say, "Not yet gotten above himself".

Jenna's mother, Cerys approved of his friendship with Jenna. During Septimus's Darke Week , he becomes moody and recalcitrant, but this is later attributed to his fear of his coming ordeal. As a wizard, he possesses great power and though he sometimes doubts himself, he displays amazing talent when using Magyk.

Physical attributes Septimus was a small boy, with green Wizard eyes and curly straw-colored hair. After leaving the Young Army with Jenna , Nicko , Silas Heap , and Marcia , he wore a sheepskin jacket and red beanie hat, later wore the traditional green apprentice robes, now upgraded with purple lining of the senior ExtraOrdinary apprentice to Marcia and a pair of brown boots, and in Physik wearing the red and black robes of the Alchemie apprentice.

His first pair of boots was devoured by his dragon, Spit Fyre. Therefore he is gifted with extreme Magykal powers. When Marcia first gives him a Charm to be UnSeen, he was the first to disappear without even uttering the Charm.

This made Marcia realize that he had extreme Magykal powers. Later he was able to repeat the feat with a small wing-shaped Charm for Hovering, which confirmed Marcia's suspicion. She then asks him to be her Apprentice, which at first he refused but later, accepted. She immediately came to life and took off for the sky.

When Jenna , Nicko and he go to find Marcia aboard The Vengeance , he showed his Magykal skill by being clever enough to utter new spells so that all three of them can see each other even if they are UnSeen. He can Transfix bigger beings than him like horses as well as Shadows.Dec 08, Charlie rated it really liked it Shelves: Silas cradled the baby in his arms and wondered how she had come to be lying in the snow on the coldest day of the year.

It is, however, important to keep in mind that this IS a different book, with different strengths and weaknesses.

Angie Sage

Darkwolfluna This is a kid's book. Upon returning to a castle, he learns about the succession of Marcia Overstrand as ExtraOrdinary Wizard. Due to the huge storm outside, the cavern collapses and floods, allowing the boat to sail again, and fly, as it turns out she is able to do. I must also complain about the many, many convenient interventions by previously unknown devices that saved the day for our young adventurers.

Is Harry Potter better than Septimus Heap?
