Much of the supernatural phenomena that occur are described only vaguely, or else are partly hidden from the characters themselves.

The Haunting of Hill House

In one episode, as Theodora and Eleanor walk outside Hill House at night, they see a ghostly family picnic that seems to be taking place in daylight. Theodora screams in fear for Eleanor to run, warning her not to look back, though the book never explains what Theodora sees. By this point in the book, it is becoming clear to the characters that the house is beginning to possess Eleanor.

Fearing for her safety, Dr. Montague and Luke declare that she must leave.

Eleanor, however, regards the house as her home and resists. Dr Montague and Luke force her into her car; she bids them farewell and drives off, but before leaving the property grounds she propels the car into a large oak tree, and it is assumed that she is killed.

In the short, final paragraph that follows, the reader is left uncertain whether Eleanor was simply an emotionally disturbed woman who committed suicide, or whether her death at Hill House has a supernatural significance. Reception Stephen King , in his book Danse Macabre , a non-fiction review of the horror genre, lists The Haunting of Hill House as one of the finest horror novels of the late 20th century and provides a lengthy review.

For reasons which pass understanding, I had never read this book before now. This, in spite of having been a huge fan of the film the version, not the awful 90s remake since I was eleven years old.

The Haunting of Hill House

I guess it just felt as if I had, since I was so familiar with the movie. Yes, of course there are differences, but predictable ones like cutting for length. After all, films are able to tell us more in less time than a book can.

The characters are fairly consistent with the novel save for the doctor's wife who is, if anything, worse than her film version. The relationships are not precisely the same, but the spirit of those relationships and what they mean to the characters are true to those in the book.

And that, more than anything makes The Haunting of Hill House one of the most unsettling things I've ever read. But it's not throat-clutching horror, or jump-out-of-your-skin horror. Rather, it's a slow and even sad progress of the death of hope in the face of something overwhelming. The horror is that no matter the source, nothing can stop it.

People scare me. And for my money, Shirley Jackson is one of the greatest horror writers ever.

Actually the s version is more accurate to the book than the latest film version. But on to the story. This possibility is suggested especially by references early in the novel to Eleanor's childhood memories about episodes of a poltergeist -like entity that seemed to involve mainly her.

However, note that many search engines truncate at a much shorter size, about characters. Your Web browser is not enabled for JavaScript. Como blogueiro e como leitor de terror e suspense, eu precisava ter esse contato.

I'll just say that it's fascinating to watch Eleanor: her rage, her jealousy, her giddiness. We will attempt to maintain the text of the edition that we worked from, unless there is an obvious correction.
